Science, tech fuel artist’s varied and vivid ouevre

Yes, artist Luke Jerram‘s most widely known piece may perhaps be “Play Me, I’m Yours” — an artwork that temporarily distributes actual full-size pianos on the streets of major cities for anyone to play. After all, it’s been featured in hugely populated towns like New York City and Los Angeles. But his body of work displays a particular fascination with science and technology.

One sculpture, for instance, is based on the seismogram generated by the 2011 Japan earthquake. Others draw from data visualization as well: charts of the ups and downs of the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the New York Stock Exchange. Microbiology, optics, and the history of sound recording have also inspired compelling pieces.

The iPad and its imaginary, smaller friend.

Apple has reportedly already tagged LCD suppliers for an iPad mini, with an eye toward launching the tablet in the second half of the year.

This latest scuttlebut comes courtesy of Taiwan news outlet Liberty Times (English translation).

Citing the usual, vague “market rumors” but also a report from Japanese securities firm Macquarie, the Liberty Times said the iPad mini could start shipping by the end of the third quarter with a goal of 6 million units.

That 6 million is the same number projected last month by Chinese online portal Netease.

LG and Au Optronics have already passed Apple’s certification tests to provide the tablet’s LCD panel, the report said. Both have been working to ship the panels for actual production of the diminutive iPad, accordi… [Read more]

Here’s what Android fragmentation really looks like

Samsung's Galaxy S II is the most prevalent Android device, trailed by almost 4,000 others.

Open Signal Maps is a nifty free Android app and Web site that crowdsources where the strongest and weakest cell signals are. But along the way, it’s also managed to amass a ton of data about what kind of Android devices are out there in the wild and they pulled it all together into some visualizations that dramatically show the extent of Android fragmentation.

OSM started logging the Android devices that download the app six months ago and created the above visualization — the interactive version on the site is a little more informative — from a sample size of 681,900 devices. What it reveals is that Samsung’s Galaxy series, particularly the Galaxy S II, is far and away the top dog, followed distantly by the HTC Desire series. After that, it turns into quite a mess of devices ranging from other heavy hitters like Motorola’s Droids down to the Hungarian Concorde Tab, which showed up once.
